Speedboat in trouble off Phi Phi

PHUKET -- A speedboat, the Luk Pradu Tor Ror 26, believed to be carrying 37 tourists from the Jian Sin Pier in Rassada, Phuket, to Phi Phi island, was reported to have capsized in strong seas about 3pm Monday.

The superintendent of Krabi Marine Office, Pol Maj Prakarn Phukate, told The Phuket News that it was not yet clear whether anyone had drowned or was injured, but it was understood that 12 people had been rescued.

Marine Police were heading to the area where the accident occurred, between Koh Maiton and Koh Kai, near Hin Musang (Shark Point), roughly halfway between Phuket and Phi Phi.

Waves offshore were reported to be running at heights of three metres, conditions in which small boats were urged not to leave the shore.
