Emergency decree to be extended

The National Security Council on Tuesday next week will seek cabinet approval for an extension of the decree for administration in an emergency situation in Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat provinces in the far South for another three months, NSC chief Wichean Potephosree said.

The imposition of the emergency decree in the three restive southern border provinces has been repeatedly extended. The last extension is due to expire on Sept 19.

Pol Gen Wichean said the need for another extension was agreed at today's meeting of the NSC. This followed his trip to the far South on Saturday to see the situation.

Asked about the structure of the new operations centre for solving problems in the far South, Pol Gen Wichean said the plan had been approved by the Council of State and returned to Deputy Prime Minister Yutthasak Sasiprapa, head of the new centre.

The new command structure would go into effect once it is signed by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, he said.
