Ex-wife, colleagues mourn

Nongnoot Saengpraphan's hopes of reuniting with her ex-husband Pol Snr Sgt Maj Wichian Klanprasert were crushed with shocking brutality when the officer was killed in a hit-and-run accident on Sukhumvit Road early yesterday.

"He had no plans at the moment except for our reunion. We were waiting for the right time and wanted to have our own child," Ms Nongnoot, 31, said of her former partner.

Despite their divorce years ago, Ms Nongnoot said she and her ex-husband continued to see each other because they lived in the same police flat building in the Thong Lor police station compound in Bangkok. Pol Snr Sgt Maj Wichian worked at the station and Ms Nongnoot is a vendor there.

"We broke up then because we had no time for each other. Setting the breakup aside, we still met every day, talked every day and took care of each other when we fell sick. My heart is broken as he will never be here anymore," Ms Nongnoot said in tears beside Pol Snr Sgt Maj Wichian's body during a bathing ceremony at Wat That Thong temple in Bangkok yesterday.

She said her ex-husband was recognised as an outstanding officer at his station and everyone loved him.

The couple were married in 2004, and divorced the following year.

Ms Nongnoot last saw Pol Snr Sgt Maj Wichian at about 7pm on Sunday after he had returned from a funeral. He later went to bed before going out to patrol on his midnight shift with his supervisor and superintendent Wasupat Pakkangwesang.

Pol Maj Wasupat said the two of them patrolled an area on a police pickup truck. Pol Snr Sgt Maj Wichian was the driver and the superintendent had his subordinate drop him off at the station about 4am.

Instead of waiting for the end of their shift together at the station at 8am, Pol Snr Sgt Maj Wichian left by himself on his motorcycle to check boxes on Thong Lor Road before he was killed, said Pol Maj Wasupat, who had been the patrol partner of the dead policeman for years.

"I regret the loss. He was a really good man. Everyone trusted him. He worked really hard. Everyone at the station loved him. I have rarely had such a colleague. He acted responsibly not only for himself but also for other police and so he was assigned to oversee the work of his peers," he said.

Relatives yesterday arranged religious ceremonies for the body of Pol Snr Sgt Maj Wichian at Wat That Thong.

The officer was killed instantly while on duty in a collision with a black Ferrari allegedly driven by Vorayuth Yoovidhya, the 27-year-old son of Red Bull energy drink manufacturer Chalerm Yoovidhya, on Sukhumvit Road early yesterday morning.

Mr Chalerm attended the funeral and paid his respects to the dead officer yesterday evening. He said he never expected such a tragedy would affect his family. He apologised to the relatives of Pol Snr Sgt Maj Wichian and promised full compensation for his death.
