Repairs to northern rail track finished

Repairs have been completed on the flood damaged rail track in Lamphun province and full services on the line to Chiang Mai were expected to resume later today, State Railway of Thailand deputy governor Kamol Tangkijcharoenchai said on Tuesday.

The damage, caused by run-off from Khun Tan Mountain, halted rail services between Lamphun and Chiang Mai on Saturday.

Mr Kamol said although the repairs had been completed, the line could not be immediately reopened because it was still raining.

The strength of the repaired track must be first tested by a running locomotive and empty passenger cars with a speed of not exceeding 20 kilometres per hour.

He expected the rail services to resume today.

The damage was estimated at 30 million baht and the SRT's loss of revenue from the service halt was about two million baht per day.

Mr Kamol said the SRT is the process of improving the rail tracks throughout the country with a budget of 35,000 million baht over a five-year period.

So far about 7,000 million baht has been used to replace wooden rail sleepers with concrete sleepers.  The entire upgrade  to the track network is expected to be completed in 2015.
