Chuvit's secretary slashed in Hat Yai

SONGKHLA - Rak Thailand Party leader Chuvit Kamolvisit's secretary was attacked at a police station on Friday by a woman who appeared to be mentally ill, police said.

Police said the woman, aged around 30, had been arrested for trying to snatch a gun from a police officer in Songkhla's Hat Yai district early Friday morning.

After she was taken to Hat Yai police station, she climbed up to the top of a water tank and threatened to kill herself.

Police were able to persuade her to come down, about the same time as the arrival of the visiting opposition MP's entourage.

While Mr Chuvit was telling police about illegal casinos operating in the area, the woman saw his entourage and ran towards them. She produced  a big knife, started waving it wildly about and slashed Mr Chuvit's male secretary along the right side of his head

The secretary was rushed to hospital.

Police said they had no idea she had the knife. The woman was detained.

Police said they did not think she was trying to attack Mr Chuvit because she was swinging the knife about in every direction.
