Quack's cosmetic 'care' leaves woman in coma

Athitaya Eiamyai, 33, went to an unlicensed cosmetic surgeon for collagen injections to increase the size of her hips and make her figure more shapely. Instead, she ended up in hospital, close to death and under the care of real doctors.

A man known as Dr Pop injected the collagen into her hipline area at a condominium unit in Lat Phrao area on Sunday.

In just a few minutes, Ms Athitaya lost consciousness and the quack "doctor" could not wake her up.

She was sent Lat Phrao Hospital where real doctors said her heart had stopped beating and her brain was deprived of oxygen for about four minutes.

Ms Athitaya, who normally works as a freelance emcee and goods introducer, was later transferred to Kluaynamthai Hospital, where she remains in the intensive care unit. The prognosis for her recovery is not good and doctors say  she may become a "sleeping beauty".

A report in the Daily News newspaper said Ms Athitaya chose to  get hip augmentation collagen injections from  Dr Pop because he charged only 40,000 baht, compared to around 70,000 baht charged by a licensed cosmetic surgery clinic.

Her mother, Rabieb Pinklub, said Ms Athitaya can open her eyes, but cannot move. A doctor had told the family to prepare for the worst and that she may die.

Ms Rabieb warned people thinking of enhancing their beauty through the injection of some foreign substance into their body to be sure to get the service from legal hospitals or clinics. Otherwise they could end up like her  daughter.

Pol Col Wiwat Kamchamnan of the Children and Women Protection Sub-Division said the police already known the real name and address of the unlicensed Dr Pop and will investigate the case.
