Pieces of the puzzle fall into place at Thailand Open draw

Thai wildcard Danai Udomchoke will meet Japan's Go Soeda in the first round of the PTT Thailand Open which begins tomorrow.

Last year’s runner-up Donald Young of the US takes part in yesterday’s draw.

World No.9 and top seed Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia got a first-round bye in yesterday's draw and will play in his first match in Bangkok against Dutchman Robin Haase or a qualifier in the second round.

France's second seed Richard Gasquet will take on Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria or a qualifier.

Milos Raonic of Canada will meet the winner between Marinko Matosevic of Australia and Ivo Karlovic of Croatia, while 2009 champion Gilles Simon of France will face Danai or Soeda.

Autralia's young star Bernard Tomic, who is seeded eighth, was handed a tough first-round assignment against 2010 champion Guillermo Garcia Lopez of Spain.

World No.147 Danai will become the only player to have played in all 10 editions of the tournament.

"I have played him several times. The most recent match was in Singapore where I lost," Danai said.

"I will not be easy for me but I will do my best."

Organising committee chairman Suwat Liptapanlop said the competion would be close as several players could win the tournament.

The event has in the past welcomed the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic but this year's edition could be more exciting, he said.

"We have several players of a new generation such as Tomic and Raonic who could be the world's top players in the future," he said.

Tipsarevic arrived on Friday night and is hoping to do well in the Thailand Open.

"I have travelled to many places in the world but this is my first time in Thailand," he said.

Verdasco, who arrived yesterday, said he was happy to return to Thailand. He is here with his parents and plans to take them to shopping and to sightseeing in Bangkok.
