Princess on 3-day visit to deep South

Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn will leave today for the deep South to visit residents in the four southern border provinces.

Fourth Army commander Lt Gen Udomchai Thamsarorach said Their Majesties the King and the Queen have expressed grave concerns over the plight of residents in the region, following a string of attacks.

Their Majesties have assigned HRH Princess Sirindhorn to visit residents in Songkhla, Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala, from today until Wednesday.

The princess will visit Sirindhorn military camp in Yarang district of Pattani. The Internal Security Operations Command (Isoc), located inside the camp, will report to the princess on the southern situation, Lt Gen Udomchai said.

Her Majesty the Queen has initiated several projects to help improve the lives of Thai Buddhists and Muslims in the region.

The Queen has not visited the region since 2004 due to health reasons.

The princess will follow up on royally-initiated development projects in the region. She will also convey Their Majesties' concern for the well-being of the southern residents.
