Police sweep nets guns, drugs

Police seized 168 guns and almost 34,000 methamphetamine (yaba) pills, and arrested 158 wanted criminals in Thailand's central provinces from Sept 18 to 22, Provincial Police Region 1 chief Winai Thongsong said on Monday.

Pol Lt-Gen Winai said 199 people were charged with illegal possession of firearms. Police seized 168 guns, two war weapons and 2,762 rounds of ammunition.

He said 1,123 people were charged with drug possession and trafficking and 33,823 yaba pills, 201.5 grammes of crystal methamphetamine (ya ice), 5.4 kilogrammes of marijuana, 47,439 kratom leaves and 0.15 grammes of ketamine were confiscated.

The Provincial Police Region 1 had been clamping down on illegal drugs and firearms to prevent violence and drug-related crimes, he added.

Provincial Police Region 1 covers the central provinces of Ang Thong, Ayutthaya, Chai Nat, Lop Buri, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Samut Prakan, Saraburi and Sing Buri.

Pol Lt-Gen Winai said police had prepared boats for use in surveillance and would set up checkpoints to prevent criminals capitalising on the potential flooding this year.
