Thailand wants human trafficking MoU with Brunei

Thailand wants a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Brunei on curbing human trafficking in the region.

A report in the Brunei Times quotes Thai ambassador to Brunei Apichart Phetcharatanas saying Thailand wants to cooperate with Brunei in addressing the issue of human trafficking, because the problem in on the rise, particularly in Asean countries.

This could best be done  by agreeing on a memorandum of understanding.

"We (Thailand) have a problem with the issue of human trafficking... Thai people are victims to the human trafficking process, or the nationals of those countries (like Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia) are victims in Thailand,” Mr Apichart is quoted as saying.

As a result, Thailand had signed similar pacts with these countries in recent years.

The Thai ambassador also expressed concern that the number of Thai girls being trafficked into Brunei, either voluntarily or forced, is increasing, although the number was "not that large".

He believed an MoU would help curb that problem.
