Democrats claim plot over blocked sewers

The Democrat Party yesterday said that sandbags and lumps of concrete recently found in the city's sewerage system had been planted there.

About 100 sandbags, concrete slabs, plastic bottles and rocks were found in sewerage lines in Min Buri and Chatuchak districts. The debris was found during a dredging project carried out by by inmates being supervised by the Corrections Department and the Metropolitan Police Bureau.

Deputy government spokesman Anusorn Iamsa-ard said on Saturday that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) must explain how the materials came to be inside the sewerage system.

He said flooding in the nearby areas during heavy rainfall last week was caused by clogged sewerage lines.

Democrat deputy spokesman Nat Bantadtan yesterday claimed political subterfuge had been launched to discredit the BMA, which is controlled by the Democrats.

"It is obvious Pheu Thai is up to something. It has insisted Bangkok will be saved from floods, so politicising the issue is an attempt to put the blame on the BMA," he said.
