Pongsapat won't run for governor

Pol Gen Pongsapat Pongcharoen, a deputy national police chief and the secretary-general of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB), has confirmed he will not run for election to the office of Bangkok governor, saying he would rather concentrate on drug suppression.

He said he had never been approached by former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra or the Pheu Thai Party to compete in the gubernatorial election due early next year.

A report that he would represent Pheu Thai in the race was a political gimmick, he added.

He had only recently take up the post of ONCB secretary-general and would rather apply himself in this capacity, combating the drug abuse plaguing so many communities.

Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung said earlier that the Pheu Thai Party had not yet picked a candidate for the Bangkok governor election.
