30 provinces on storm alert

Governors of 30 flood-risk provinces have been ordered to prepare for the impact of tropical storm Gaemi which is moving into Thailand from Cambodia and could cause heavy rain today and over the next few days.

Deputy Interior Minister Chuchart Hansawat on Friday morning called a video conference of the 30 provincial governors for a briefing on preparations to deal with possible heavy rain, flash flooding and forest run-off.

Mr Chuchart ordered a round-the-clock watch on the weather and water situation and strict compliance with the emergency plans set by the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department and the Water and Flood Resources Management Committee.

Chartchai Promlert, director general of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department, said on Friday that Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra had directed the department to ensure that provincial officials were ready to provide assistance where ever needed.

Mr Chartchai said his department has set up an emergency centre to coordinate disaster responses as needed.
