Thais more corrupt than Malaysians

In direct contrast to Malaysians, most Thais accept corruption in government, according to the conclusions of twin opinion polls conducted in Thailand and Malaysia.

Noppadol Kannikar, director of Abac Poll at the Assumption University, on Wednesday reported the result of an opinion poll conducted in conjunction with UCSI University in Malaysia on the topic of corruption within government.

The analysed data showed that 63.1% of the Malaysian population is against government corruption, even if there is some personal benefit from it.

On the contrary, a survey of 3,125 respondents in Bangkok and 19 provinces conducted independently by Abac indicated that 68.5% of Thais condone official dishonesty if they have something to gain from it, Mr Noppadol said.

During in-depth interviews, some of the Thai respondents who support government corruption said that they feared being coerced or harassed by the authorities if they did not pay. At the same time, they saw that officials in all Thai governments were corrupt, but never punished.

More than 90% of the poll respondents in Thailand believed that the death penalty would be the most effective way to curb corruption. They also wanted protection for the whistleblowers.

Moreover, 78% of the Thai respondents said that they have never had an opportunity to monitor government spending on various public projects.
