Sukumpol pursues Abhisit draft case

Defence Minister Sukumpol Suwanatat has appointed a committee to gather information to strip opposition leader Abhisit Vejjajiva of his military rank and demand he return all the pay he received from the military.

The committee is chaired by deputy permanent secretary for defence Gen Prasobchai Kasemsant, a military source said. Other committee members include deputy permanent secretary for defence Gen Nipat Thonglek and director-general of the Secretariat Department Gen Charn Komolhiran.

Most of the members were former members of previous panels investigating Mr Abhisit's alleged military dodging.

ACM Sukumpol believes Mr Abhisit dodged mandatory conscription and used a falsified document to apply for an army position. ACM Sukumpol earlier said Mr Abhisit had presented a falsified military personnel registration document to apply for a job as a Chulachomklao Royal Military Academy lecturer. The job allowed Mr Abhisit to be exempted from conscription.
