Tesco Lotus to continue successful green campaign

Ek-Chai Distribution System Co, the operator of Tesco Lotus, is taking a big leap to combat climate change.

The company has set aside 1.2 billion baht to further cut carbon emissions this year after a successful reduction of more than 30% over the last six years.

Of the total budget, 920 million baht has already been invested in new store designs and the remainder will go on other energy-saving initiatives for its business operations.

Moreover, the company has lined up high impact campaigns to stimulate green shopping habits while continuing to engage staff and communities in combating climate change.

"As Thailand's leading retailer, we have a clear responsibility and a significant opportunity to protect our environment. We have been reducing the direct impact from our own business operations and empowering our employees, customers and communities who together can have a big positive impact on the environment," said Tesco Lotus CEO John Christie.

In 2006, Tesco Lotus vowed to combat climate change by reducing carbon emissions from its own operations by at least 50% by the end of 2020, down from 320,000 to 160,000 tons of carbon emission.

At the halfway point of its green journey, the company has already reduced 30% of its emission through implementation of comprehensive initiatives in its own operations.

The company plans to spend 6 billion baht to open new branches in all formats next year. The new branches will be opened upcountry, which has more room to grow when compared to Bangkok, where the market is quite saturated.

Moreover, the company plans to open three distribution centres _ in Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen and Surat Thani. The construction of these distribution centres will start next year and will be completed in 2015. The distribution centres will support its store expansion in the future.

Currently, there are over 1,000 Tesco Lotus stores in all formats across the country.
