Two homes were destroyed and an elderly woman killed by a fireworks explosion in Ayutthaya province early Tuesday.

Authorities suspect the victim was manufacturing fireworks illegally.

Earlier Wednesday morning, the explosion took place at a cluster of three wooden houses in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya district. Two of the buildings were destroyed.

Rescue workers found the body of 66-year-old Urai Meemukjit and fireworks casings at the scene.

Investigators concluded Urai made fireworks at her home without a permit. The forensic team believes  the victim was pressing gunpowder into the empty casings when it was ignited by a spark, triggering the explosion.

Pol Lt Col Sakdina Sukmak, deputy superintendent of Ayutthaya Muang Precinct, said it was likely the houses were being used as an illegal fireworks factory.
