3G auction gets final approval

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission's telecom committee on Thursday afternoon endorsed the 3G bid results.
In its broadcasted meeting to reporters attended by five members and chaired by Settapong Malisuwan, the committee repeated the discussion of some topics, causing two members to threaten to walk out.
The chairman then asked for a vote in which four members endorsed the bid result. The exception was Pravit Leesatapornwongsa who is the NBTC's member on consumer protection.
The NBTC will send the official result to the three winners of the bid.
The three bidders, all representing mobile operators Advanced Info Service (AIS), Dtac and TrueMove, each won their maximum quota of 15MHz of spectrum. AIS offered 14.625 billion baht while Dtac and TrueMove offered 13.5 billion baht each.
The sale fetched a total of 41.625 billion baht, only 1.125 billion baht or 2.78 per cent above the minimum price.
Winners have to pay 50 per cent of the amount within 90 days then within seven days of payment, they will get the licences to operate mobile services on the 2.1-gigahertz (GHz) spectrum for 15 years.
