Ex-village chief slain in Pattani

A former village headman was killed in a drive-by shooting in Pattani’s Mayo district on Saturday morning, police said.
Pol Col Kongath Suwankam, chief of Mayo police station, said he received a report on the attack about 11am and led a team of police to the scene.
Police found the body of Dora-mae Mahae, 59, a former village chief of Moo 4 in Tambon Khanoon of Mayo district.
Witnesses told police that the victim was travelling on his motorcycle on a local road in his village when a gunman riding pillion on another motorcycle fired on him with a handgun. The attackers then fled.
Dira-mae took bullets in the head and died on the spot. Police are investigating.
Since the resurgence of insurgency in 2004, there have neem around 11,000 violent incidents instigated by secessionists in the Muslim- majority southernmost provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat, with almost 5,000 people killed and nearly 8,000 injured.
