UPDATE: 'Rooney at 10' sparks ManU

Wayne Rooney marked 10 years in the Premier League with a virtuoso performance in Manchester United’s 4-2 win at home to Stoke City.

Rooney, who announced himself to English football with a winner for Everton against Arsenal almost exactly a decade ago, scored two and created another as he led United’s comeback from an own-goal he had scored himself.

Robin van Persie and Danny Welbeck were also on target for the hosts, with Michael Kightly pulling it back to 3-2 before Rooney put the tie to bed.

United sit four points behind leaders Chelsea after the win, with Manchester City's late winner at West Brom keeping them level with their city rivals.

Edin Dzeko struck twice after his 79th-minute introduction as a substitute, the second of which came deep into injury time, as 10-man Manchester City defeated West Brom 2-1 at The Hawthorns.

Juan Mata inspired Chelsea to a 4-2 win at Tottenham Hotspur in a thrilling  Premier League opening match at White Hart Lane.

Mata scored twice and created Daniel Sturridge's late fourth as Chelsea came from behind after Jermain Defoe and William Gallas had overhauled Gary Cahill's fine opener.

The defeat was harsh on Tottenham, who created more chances but lacked the same quality in the final third, while Chelsea relied on their three attacking midfielders to carve the hosts apart when required.

The result sees league leaders Chelsea move to 22 points, seven ahead of the Manchester clubs, who played later on Saturday. Spurs stay fifth but could fall to eighth depending on other results.
