Soldiers wounded in Pattani

Two soldiers were injured in a drive-by shooting in Pattani’s Nong Chick district late Saturday morning.

Pol Col Arkom Buathong, chief of the Nong Chick police station, said the attack took place about 11.30am on a local road in Moo 6 in tambon Bor Thong of Nong Chick district.

Witnesses told police that Sgt Yuthana Luanthong, 31, and Pvt Ekachai Nangwong, 31, were travelling on a motorcycle when gunmen riding pillion on another two motorcycles fired on them with handguns. The assailants then fled.

Sgt Yuthana was shot in his left arm and Pvt Ekachai took bullets in his right shoulder and right leg. They were taken to Pattani hospital.

Police believed it was the work of separatist militants.

Earlier the same morning, a man was wounded by a bomb explosion while walking in a rubber plantation in Narathiwat.

Police said Wiang Boon-insuk, 63, of Muang district, stepped on a mine buried at the foot of a rubber tree. He was wounded in the right ankle and taken to Narathiwat Ratchanakarin hospital.

The incident took place in Ban Mai Ngam in tambon Bang Por of Narathiwat's Muang district. Police blamed separatist militants.
