About 7,000 village headmen and kamnan on Wednesday morning gathered at the Royal Plaza to protest against a government bill which sets a limit on the terms of new office holders.
Incumbent elected village chiefs and kamnan serve until mandatory retirement at 60.
The village chiefs and kamnan, all dressed in civil service uniforms, placed a wreath in front of the King Rama V statue to show their respect for the great monarch.
Their core leaders then began making speeches from the rally stage, calling on the government to put the legislation on hold.
Traffic police advised motorists to avoid using roads near the Royal Plaza.
Police said they expected about 29,000 village and tambon chiefs would turn out for the rally.
Six companies of police have been deployed at the rally site and nearby areas to maintain peace and order.
