Village chiefs rally to end today

The protest against the local administration bill, which would limit the terms of village and tambon chiefs to five years, at the Royal Plaza will end late this afternoon, the protest leader said on Wednesday.

Yongyos Kaewkiew, chairman of the Village Chiefs and Kamnans Association of Thailand, said he was satisfied with the decision by Pheu Thai Party to delay passage of the bill.

The village chiefs and kamnan had confidence in the ruling party’s promise and were preparing to peacefully disperse later this afternoon, he added.

Mr Yongyos insisted that his association had no thought of joining the planned anti-government rally by the Pitak Siam group, led by Gen Boonlert Kaewprasit, later this month.

Post Today website reported that Interior Minister and Pheu Thai leader Charupong Ruangsuwan will take to the rally stage in the afternoon to explain to the protesters his party's resolution to delay the bill.

Mr Charupong will also listen to opinions and suggestions from the protesters about the controversial legislation.

The Pheu Thai Party on Tuesday agreed at a meeting of its MPs to delay the local administration bill.

The bill has been accepted in principle by the House of Representatives and is being scrutinised by a House committee.

Pol Col Preeda Sathavorn, deputy spokesman of the metropolitan police bureau, said on Wednesday that about 16,000 village chiefs and kamnan had gathered at the Royal Plaza.

Six companies of police were deployed at the rally site and nearby areas to maintain peace and order, he said.
