A wedding ceremony for a 13-year-old girl and a 32-year-old man was interrupted and stopped in Bang Pla Ma district of Suphan Buri on Thursday by Pavena Hongsakul, the head of a foundation for children and women.
The Pavena Foundation for Children and Women was earlier informed by the mother that the girl's grandmother had coerced her granddaughter into marrying a factory worker who was almost 20 years her senior.
Suphan Buri police chief Pol Maj Gen Chatcharin Sawangwong was also informed about the marriage. He said that those involved will be prosecuted because, for whatever reason it was arranged, it is illegal for a girl of that age to get married.
The child protection authority has also been contacted and the girl will now go through psychological rehabilitation.
It must be made clear that child marriage is against the law in all parts of the country, Pol Maj Gen Chatcharin said.
