Jeff Bridges, who has been promoting the project for several years, is actively involved in its production, working hand in hand with the Weinstein Company and Walden Media.

Launched in 1993 and set in a bland, colorless world where people adhere to the doctrine of "Sameness" to avoid pain, The Giver centers around 12-year-old Jonas, who is selected for the position of "Receiver of Memory." His position entails storing all the memories of the past, before Sameness took hold on society. Jeff Bridges will portray the boy's trainer.

Three other books set in the same future era act as loose sequels to The Giver: Gathering Blue (2000), Messenger (2004) and Son (2012).
