The Rights and Liberties Protection Department on Tuesday announced a budget of 250 million baht will be available to fund compensation to wrongly accused defendants and innocent third parties affected by criminal cases.
Department director general Eknarat Sevatanan presented compensation to 15 victims, totalling 1.47 million baht, or nearly 100,000 baht each.
Mr Eknarat said his department had set the compensation budget to 250 million baht per year.
The Compensation and Expense for the Accused in Criminal Case Act guarantees that any third party affected by the criminal actions of others can apply to receive compensation from the fund, he said.
