Smuggled booze seized from train

Hundreds of cartons containing smuggled Scotch whisky have been seized from a train at Ratchaburi railway station.

The swooped on the shipment after receiving information that a large quantity of smuggled goods were being moved on an train scheduled to make a stop there. The raid was supported by the Ratchaburi provincial governor.

At least 50 customs officers boarded three trains after they stopped at the station --  Special Express 36 Butterworth-Bangkok, Special Express 170 Sungai Kolok-Bangkok, and Special Express 172 Yala-Bangkok - to conduct searches.

More than 500 cartolns containing  Johnny Walker Black Label, Red Label and Swing were found in the sleeping compartments of one train, along with some unauthorised agricultural products.

Authorities initially estimated the value of the contraband at more than one million baht.

The bust was made after the Customs Department was told by an informant that a large shipment of smuggled alcohol was being transported to Bangkok and Nakhon Pathom provinces.

Police said they will now expand the investigation to catch those behind the racket.
