About 1,500 units of blood are being donated each day. The amount is far short of the 5,000 units needed by hospitals throughout Thailand, the Thai Red Cross said.

Dr Soisaang Pikulsod, director of the National Blood Centre, said on Thursday that blood donation has fallen from 1,500 to 2,000 units a day to only about 1,200 units per day since the beginning of November. There should also be at least 3,000 units in reserve at all times. As a result, there is not enough to be distributed to patients around the country.

The demand for blood at more than 120 hospitals and medical facilities in Bangkok and vicinity is 5.000 units a day, double the amount of the donated supply. The blood banks have only been able to give them 1,400 units per day.

People are strongly urged to donate blood at the National Blood Centre on Henry Dunant Road in Bangkok.
