Jakarta: single-gender education to end violence

Jakarta is planning to stop the ongoing violent rivalry between two schools by making them single-sex schools, the Jakarta Globe reported.

Students of SMAN 70 and SMAN 6 are notorious for starting street brawls with each other, normally at the beginning of the academic year. One student was killed in a fight and many more were injured this year.

Frustrated by the problem, the Jakarta Teachers' Forum proposed to make SMAN 6 an all-girl school and SMAN 70 a male-only institution and put it to Jakarta Deputy Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama on Monday.

The deputy governor approved the proposal and is planning to have it carried out as soon as possible, perhaps, as early as next year, Retno Listriyarti, head of the teachers' organisation, said.

"Hopefully they will be dating instead," she said jokingly.
