Crackdown on fried bananas

BANGKOK - Starting from Monday, Pom Prap Sattru Phai district of Bangkok will clamp down on illegal vendors of fried bananas who take up space in traffic lanes.

Suwat Tansatien, the assistant to the district director, said the district authority met with six authorised fried banana shops to discuss the regulation of street vendors with the aim of curbing traffic congestion.

The shops will be required to submit photographs of their employees to the authorities. They will also be strictly prohibited from selling to cars on the streets. A violation carries a maximum penalty of a 2,000 baht fine. The new ordinance will come into effect on Monday.

Mr Suwat also warned that the buyers could be fined 500 baht.

Anyone who sees a banana vendor on the streets is asked to report them to pom_prap@hotmail.com or the district's Facebook page.
