Charter push will go ahead

The government is to push forward controversial charter amendment plans once the next session of parliament opens in December.

A government panel has finished working on the framework for amending the charter, said Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Phongthep Thepkanchana. He was speaking in his capacity as the panel's deputy chairman.

He said what the committee had come up with would not be revealed until all the coalition partners were officially in agreement.

Pheu Thai MP for Yasothon Peerapan Palusuk, a panel member, said the committee had decided the third reading of the charter amendment bill, earlier suspended by the House after a court ruling, must and will take place. But how to proceed with this would be discussed and decided upon once again by the coalition parties, said Mr Peerapan.

However, for the time being, certain sections of the constitution such as the one concerning party dissolution would probably be amended while waiting for the final go-ahead by the coalition parties, he added.

Red shirt co-leader Korkaew Pikulthong said the government would push to resume charter amendment efforts that were put on hold because of fears they would trigger fresh political turmoil, after the new House session begins on Dec 21.
