BJT votes for Yingluck

The opposition Bhumjaithai Party supported Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra in the no-confidence vote on Wednesday but has denied claims it did so because it wants to join the coalition government.

Supachai Jaisamut, a BJT list MP, said the party's different decisions in today's vote were based on information presented during the censure debate.

BJT has 34 MPs - 27 in its main faction and seven in the Matchima faction. Of the 27, only 24 can perform their duty in parliament as three others have been suspended with legal problems over their qualifications.

Mr Supachai said that at a meeting this morning before the censure vote, the party passed a resolution that the 24 eligible MPs should vote for Ms Yingluck, abstain in the vote against Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung and Defence Minister Sukumpol Suwanatat, and vote against Deputy Interior Minister Chatt Kuldilok.

In the case of the prime minister, the opposition speakers presented no clear evidence against her, he said.

There was insufficient information for the 24 BJT MPs to give a vote of confidence for Mr Chalerm and ACM Sukumpol.

"The information against Pol Lt-Gen Chatt was clear, so we did not vote for him," Mr Supachai said.

Mr Supachai denied BJT wanted to join the government and this was why it voted for Ms Yingluck, saying that it was not necessary for an opposition party to always be hostile to the government.

"The country is our priority.  BJT does not think of joining the government.  We are looking forward to the next election," said the BJT MP.
