Korkaew to testify again on bail

Pheu Thai Party list MP Korkaew Pikulthong is required to appear before the Criminal Court again on Friday for additional questioning in connection with a petition asking the court to revoke bail earlier granted to him and four other Pheu Thai MPs.

The petition was filed by Nipit Intarasombat, a Democrat Party MP for Phatthalung, who accused the five Pheu Thai MPs of breaking bail conditions.

The other MPs are Nattawut Saikuar, who is also deputy commerce minister, Weng Tojirakarn, Wophuthalaeng Pattanaphumthai and Karun Hosakul.  All were present at today's court hearing.

The five are among 24 defendants charged with terrorism in connection with the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) protests in 2010.

Mr Nattawut was allowed to testify first.  He spent only five minutes explaining to the court that his political activities were within the scope of the law, both during UDD rallies and on the stage.

Mr Nipit, in his testimony, said Mr Korkaew on July 4 gave an interview saying if the Constitution Court ruled the government's move to amend the charter was an attempt to overthrow the constitutional monarchy under Section 68 of the constitution, the red-shirts would take to the streets.

He said Mr Korkaew intended to create fear and division among the people and what he said was a threat to the Constitution Court.

Mr Korkaew testified in his defence after Mr Nipit finished.  He insisted he had no intention of creating unrest and was confident he had not breached the bail conditions.

After hearing their testimony, the court told Mr Korkaew to appear before it again tomorrow for additional questioning, and then adjourned the hearing.

A number of red-shirt supporters gathered in front of the court in a show of support for the five MPs. At least 100 police were deployed to ensure law and order.
