Commissions Campanas to re-imagine the iconic polo for the holiday season

For its annual Holiday Collector's Series, Lacoste has commissioned the Campana Brothers to re-imagine its iconic polo. This is the second time the brand has worked with the duo from Brazil, and the new polos are now being rolled out in stores around the world.

Brazilian brothers Humberto and Fernando Campanas shot to fame in 1998 when their designs were displayed in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Their  designs are based on humble or everyday materials which they transform and reinvent in new scenarios.  Their creativity is clearly manifest in the true Brazilian style and choice of colours and combinations. They aim for "creative chaos and triumphantly simple solutions".

Back in 2003, while exploring new forms of upholstering, the brothers created a technique of rolling together different sorts of materials. From fabrics, carpets, felt and rubber nets, flat and three-dimensional elements formed colourful swirls to be applied in a vast array of limited and numbered pieces.

"Sushi" started off as a nickname but soon became the title for the collection, which encompasses chairs, sofas, tables, puffs, buffets and objects. The explanation behind it is that for Brazilians any Japanese food is sushi, and the wrapped and rolled aspect of the materials reminded the designers of that typical food. The arrangement of colours and textures of the "Sushi" has since become a Campana trademark.

The transposition of the swirls for the Lacoste Holiday Collector's Series #7 was a natural step: the composition of crocodile emblems arranged into a spiral becomes a playful interpretation of Campanas' sushis. The composition is also a more controlled design as the Holiday Collector Series #4 they did for Lacoste in 2009 but still keeps the same ethos. The women's special edition features two swirls of colourful crocs at the left chest area, while the men's edition has one larger swirl of black or white crocs.

Based in Sao Paulo, Estudio Campana is constantly investigating new possibilities in concept and uses for different clashes of materials. It creates bridges and dialogues where the exchange of information is also a source of inspiration. Designers Fernando and Humberto Campana carry the duality of their rural Brazilian background and the urban codes from their youth and adulthood.

This Holiday Collector's Series comprises the Diffusion Line featuring swirls of coloured logos embroidered on the chest. Men Polo @ Bt6,250/Women Polo @ Bt5,650.
