Thailand, Myanmar to discuss Dawei zone

Thai and Myanmar officials will meet on Friday to discuss the development of the Dawei special economic zone, said Transport Minister Chadchat Sittipunt.

The discussion is intended to prepare information for Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and Myanmar President Thein Sein, who are due to meet soon to discuss the development.

The two leaders were earlier scheduled to meet in Dawei on Dec 17 to talk about the development but Myanmar announced a postponement on Friday, a government source said.

Thein Sein has also postponed a scheduled state visit to Australia and New Zealand next week.

Mr Chadchat said six subcommittees have been established to oversee six sectors related to the Dawei project _ industrial development, infrastructure, financial services, energy development, rules and regulations and community development.

He said a report on the two countries' cooperative efforts on the project is expected to be completed in February.

The Dawei project could not be carried out unless it is backed by the two governments, he said

Although the project was viewed as benefiting other countries in the region, it was necessary for the Thai government to push for it alongside Myanmar, Mr Chadchat said.

Italian-Thai Development was granted rights to develop infrastructure for the Dawei development project.

Mr Chadchat said the government had to play a role in the project as it was too big for only one private firm to be the sole investor in it.
