Piano recitals by Swiss virtuoso

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

D&M Music Studio will be presenting a recital at the Goethe Institute on Dec 19 by Swiss pianist Dan Poenaru who will perform works by Schubert, Chopin, Ravel, Balakirev and Schumann. He will give another recital at the AUA Language Centre in Chiang Mai on Dec 21.

Poenaru comes from the great Romanian school of piano, which counts among its most illustrious representatives Dinu Lipatti and Clara Haskil. Born in Bucharest, he began studying the piano at the George Enescu College of Music in the Rumanian capital and won, at the age of 15, a special jury prize in a national contest for his interpretation of a concerto written by Paul Constantinescu for piano and orchestra.

In the early 1980s he studied with Argentinian pianist Eduardo Vercelli in Geneva and obtained a diploma of virtuosity from the Academy of Neuchatel, also in Switzerland. He acquired Swiss nationality a few years later.

He began his international career as a soloist with recitals, first in Switzerland and later in Germany, Russia and several other eastern European countries.

Poenaru has been described as playing with a natural reserve and graciousness, but also "a particular dynamic and unique fire which makes his performances a powerful experience".

Tickets for the Bangkok recital, which starts at 8pm, cost 500 baht (250 baht for students) and can be purchased from Robinson Piano, Siam Discovery (call 02-658-1080/1). Tickets for the Chiang Mai show (7pm start) cost 300 baht (200 baht for students) and will be available at the door.
