Boy, 11, charged over phone shooting

LAMPANG -- An 11-year-old boy accused of shooting a 13-year-old after being accused of stealing a mobile phone will be charged with attempted murder, police said on Monday.

The 11-year-old admitted firing the gun, but claimed it was only supposed to be a warning shot, Pol Capt Wisit Laewrit, an investigator at Jaeson police station in Muang Pan district, said.

The boy was confronted and accused by the victim and three of his friends of stealing a mobile phone. Scared, the boy ran home, chased by the older boys.

When he arrived at the house, the boy, said he grabbed his father’s shotgun and fired a shot to scare away his pursuers, Pol Capt Wisit said.

One of the older boys was hit and seriously injured. He was in a stable condition in hospital.

Pol Capt Wisit said the boy would be handed over to the Lampang juvenile observation and protection centre on Tuesday.
