Major fire at market, B70m damage

PHITSANULOK - Fire raced through Nongtom market in tambon Wongkong on Tuesday night, causing approximately 70 million baht in damage.

The fire destroyed 33 premises, affecting around 100 people, Wattanachai Sanongkun, mayor of Wongkong Municipality said.

Witnesses said they heard a loud bang from a wooden structure in the northern part of the market and then fire engulfed the area, spreading quickly along the electricity line.

The fire lasted two and a half hours. Smoke was still coming from parts of the debris.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has provided assistance and  40,000 baht per shop to  the fire victims. Army soldiers are assisting the town and the Red Cross has also joined in to aid the victims.

Mr Wattanachai said the local government will set up tents to help the victims and sort out paperwork quickly to provide the victims with a recovery fund.

The cause of the market fire was still unclear. Police have cordoned off the area while the investigation continues.
