Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that the four-door derivative of the latest A-class will be called CLA-class.
The CLA-class is essentially a four-door A-class saloon.
In yet another publicity push, Mercedes-Benz has issued a picture of a lightly disguised CLA undergoing development test.
The CLA's sleek profile was first previewed in the Concept Sports Coupe show car earlier this year. It emphasised a sporty look over a roomy interior.
Positioned as a baby CLS, the A-class saloon will be launched in production form next year with engines ranging up to the 211hp 2.0-litre petrol-turbo used in the A250.
Mercedes has also revealed first details about its 4Matic all-wheel-drive system developed for transversely laid out engines and said to be lighter than rivals' systems.
It is claimed that torque can vary fully between the front and rear axles when conditions require. In normal driving, the front wheels can drive all the time for optimal economy. Also confirmed is a fiery CLA45 AMG version whose AWD system will come in handy to cope with the high outputs of the 2.0-litre engine developing in the region of 340hp and 400Nm.
The regular CLA, most likely in CLA180/200 forms, is set to become a hit in Thailand, where buyers typically love saloons and yearn for an entry-level Mercedes-Benz priced at around 2 million baht.
All-wheel-drive will help contain power in fiery AMG version.
