5 more road offences classed 'serious'

The Metropolitan Police Bureau has added five more offences to the list of serious traffic infringements, ahead of the New Year holiday period when traffic accidents always ncrease.

There were already 12 offences listed on the serious traffic infringement list, which allows for on-the-spot fines to be issued.

These offences relate to speeding, racing, drink-driving and parking in prohibited areas.

Deputy metropolitan police chief Worasak Nopsitthiporn, who supervises traffic affairs, said yesterday the five additional offences are: running red lights; driving without wearing a seatbelt; driving without carrying a driving licence, offences related to vehicle equipment and accessories; and using a mobile phone while driving.

Maj Gen Worasak said the move is aimed at increasing road safety during the New Year holiday period.

Police at every station have been instructed to install cameras at high-risk locations in order to capture pictures of traffic law violators, he said.
