'Saints Row 3' played by 5.5mil says company boss

Saints Row: The Third was "the hit nobody realized was a hit," said THQ president Jason Rubin on December 15, with 5.5 million people having played the raucous tale of corporate-minded mayhem.

That was prior to December's Humble THQ Bundle, which offered the open-world bedlam-o-tron as a bonus to generous punters that paid over the average for a selection of back-catalog titles -- an average price that was a mere $5.76 by the time the offer period closed on December 13, with a $5m take helping to restore THQ's financial fortunes.

Rubin's Twitter comment comes after 2011 game Saints Row: The Third was relaunched along with extra missions and character costumes as November's Saints Row: The Third - The Full Package.

Though the Saints Row series started off remarkably similar to Grand Theft Auto, it was widely acknowledged to have found its own stride with Saints Row: The Third.

Should Saints Row 4 release in 2013, it would be doing so during the same year as a major Grand Theft Auto release, and not for the first time; GTA V is due spring 2013, while GTA IV released April 2008 and Saints Row II followed six months later.
