UPDATE: Inquiry into death fall

An inquiry panel has been set up into the death of a female drug suspect who fell from a building at Bangkok police head office while in custody.

Pol Maj Gen Prayont Lasua, of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, on Wednesday ordered the inquiry into the death of  Veeraya Maneechai on Tuesday night.

Veeraya was arrested on Tuesday evening for possession of 95 methaphetamine pills and 380 ecstasy pills.

She plummeted to her death from the third floor of a building in the police bureau compound around midnight.

Pol Maj Gen Prayont said the suspect was not handcuffed because she was a woman and had cooperated with  police, giving information whch led to the arrest of more  suspects. Veeraya had three outstanding arrest warrants against her, he added.

Prior to her death, the suspect talked to her mother on the phone and she appeared not to have any problem, according to the officer.

Pol Col Taweewong Dithyaem was responsible for the night shift on the day.

Pol Col Teekachote Suwannakom, an MPB deputy commander will chair the probe panel, which is expected to  report a result in  2 or 3 days.
