Extra flights during holiday period

Domestic and international airlines will operate more than 400 extra flights through the two Bangkok airports to cater for travellers' needs during the Christmas and New Year holidays, according to Airports of Thailand (AoT).

Acting director Somchai Sawasdeephol said there would be an expected 255,300 travelers using the services of six airports across the country from Dec 25 to Jan 5.

He said there were 206,700 air passengers during the holiday season last year. The anticipated increase was 48,600 travelers (about 24%).

He said Bangkok’s two main airports alone would have to handle about 197,000 flyers, about a 29% increase on last year.

AoT’s acting director said the current 1,100 flights per day from Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi airports is not enough to provide services for the increasing number of travelers.

He said an additional 422 flights, operated by 27 airlines using the airports in Bangkok, would be scheduled to  cope with the holiday demand  -   271 international flights and 151 flights for domestic passengers.

Flight services  would also be increased at all regional airports.

A total of 190 flights will fly from Phuket airport each day during the holiday period, carrying an estimated 31,000 passengers per day.

AOT has increased the number flights to 124 per day for Chiang Mai airport, to 44 per day for Had Yai airport,  and to 18 a day for Mae Faa Luang airport in Chiang Rai.

He advised passengers to arrive at the airport about two hours before their flight departure time.
