Eight tourists, mostly Russians, miraculously escaped serious injury when the roof of their minibus was peeled back like a sardine can by the jib of a mobile crane at about 9 am yesterday (December 18) in Chalong, Phuket.

Pol Capt Kraisorn Boonprasob of the Chalong Police explained, “The crane had turned and was backing off Patak Rd about 200 metres from Chalong Circle. The crane jib was sticking out over the road. Possibly the minibus driver did not see it.”

The van went under the crane jib, and the hook at the end of the jib ripped the roof off.

The tourists inside the minibus received minor head injuries, cuts and bruises and were taken to Vachira Hospital and then transferred to Phuket International Hospital – where there are Russian-speaking staff – for treatment. Most were released afterwards.
