Korkaew to be freed tomorrow

Pheu Thai Party list MP Korkaew Pikulthong will be released from detention tomorrow, Dec 21, when parliament reconvenes in ordinary session, Criminal Court chief justice Tawee Prachuaplarp said on Thursday.

Mr Tawee said the Criminal Court had received a letter from House deputy spokesman Charoen Chankomol, requesting the release of Mr Korkaew so that he can perform the duties of an MP in parliament according to Section 131 of the constitution.

The court had issued a warrant for Mr Korkaew's release, starting Friday.  The release is valid from Dec 21 until  the day the parliament next goes into recess.

Mr Korkaew would then have to go back to jail unless the Appeals Court ordered otherwise, because his lawyers on Dec 19 submitted an appeal against the Criminal Court's order to revoke his bail.

Mr Korkaew is one of the 24 defendants in a terrorism case in connection with the 2010 violent protests who were initially granted bail.

The Criminal Court last month ordered Mr Korkaew's bail revoked for breaking bail conditions. His subsequent bail requests had been rejected by the court.
