Gang assaulted as they re-enact crime

CHON BURI - Seven young men arrested for beating another man almost to death were abused and assaulted by his friends and relatives when they were taken to re-enact the crime.

Police said friends and relatives of Marut Utoksin, the 24-year-old victim, cursed and yelled at his attackers as police forced them to re-enact what happened last Saturday night at the crime scene.

The irate crowd eventually charged through the police line and began assaulting the seven men, according to a report in Daily News.

Police immediately took the men away from the angry crowd and returned them to the police station.

Pol Lt Col Nipon Pomsanarm, deputy superintendent of Sattahip police station, said members of a motorbike gang forced Mr Marut and his friend to park their motorbike on Sukhumvit Road in Sattahip district of Chon Buri province last Saturday night. The gang then attacked the two.

Pol Lt Col Nipon said Mr Marut was then beaten senseless in a 10 minute onslaught with lengths of wood and with crash helmets as his friend fled. Mr Marut was later rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

Doctors said he had suffered severe brain injury and was still in a coma.

Pol Lt Col Nipon said the police found images of the attack on a security camera at a printing store near the crime scene and identified the seven men. They were charged with attempted murder.

The gang members explained they were upset because Mr Marut honked at them when they were on the road, police said.
