First-car rebate claims hit one million

A total of 1.01 million new car owners had registered for tax rebates under the government’s first-car scheme, Somchai Poolsawasdi, director general of the excise department, said on Friday.

As of Dec 21, owners of 1,010,854 new vehicles applied to the department for the tax rebate, he said.

Of the total, 595,430 had bought sedans, 202,191 bought pickup trucks, 210,956 double-cap pickups, and the remaining 2,277 units were unidentified category vehicles, he added.

Almost 74 billion baht would be given out in rebates under the first time car-buyers programme, said Mr Somchai.

The department is open for registration services for the new car owners every day until Dec 31, he said.
