The nation, religion and the monarchy are the main institutions which have held the Thai people together and have safeguarded the country's peace and sovereignty, Gen Prem said in a keynote address at the opening a seminar held by the National Economic and Social Advisory Council on Friday.

Therefore, full consideration must be given to use of the three institutions to promote national security, and it was necessary to ensure that everyone understands how this will benefit the nation, Gen Prem said.

The privy council head expressed concern obout the ongoing political conflict and urged the people to accept each others' ways of thinking. He believed that their differences should not be an obstacle to national unity.

Asked by a reporter how would he like to see Thailand, he simply responded, "Just like all Thais".

Gen Prem plans to offer New Year blessings  to armed forces leaders at his Bangkok residence on Dec 27.
