Thai kids sweep Taiwan math awards

Twenty Thai primary students have won 31 awards at the 11th International Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Competition 2012 in Taiwan.

The event was organised by Taoyuan Multi-education and Development Association last Sunday. More than 1,000 contestants from 10 countries - Thailand, the US, Japan, Singapore, Canada, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, India and the host nation - took part.

Nimnual Nuamyoo, math programme director at Children Development School, said the participants ranged from kindergarteners to secondary students selected by the programme. They took a combined 31 prizes.

Pudit Tanakulkrairit, a seven-year-old first grader from Bangkok Christian College, said that he was not stressed by the contest because he had taken part in international competitions before. He said he was very happy to win first place in the primary level.
