Heavy rain in South

The Meteorological Department’s southern centre on Monday issued a warning for people in the South to prepare for widespread scattered rain with heavy falls in some areas and the danger of floods Monday and Tuesday.

People living near hillsides and waterways in Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat should prepare for possible flash floods and forest runoff, the department said.

There will also be strong wind-generated two to four-metre-high waves in the lower part of the Gulf of Thailand. All shipping should proceed with caution and small boats should stay ashore.

Thai Rath online reported on Monday that the southern provinces of Phatthalung, Satun, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Narathiwat had been hit by flash floods triggered by several days of heavy rain.

A villager in Phatthalung was killed by a fallen tree caused by strong win, according to Thai Rath online.

In Narathiwat, about 30 centimetres of floodwater submerged some areas in the six districts of Sungai Kolok, Takbai, Si Sakhon, Sungai Padi, Waeng and Chanae, it said.

In the southernmost province of Yala, the disaster prevention and mitigation office has set up flood watch centres in all districts. The centres will be responsible for watching the situation, providing advance warning for people and coming up with needed assistance for disaster-affected locals, Post Today website reported.

Manager Online reported on Monday that all fishing boats in Narathiwat had kept ashore due to the strong winds and high waves in the lower part of the Gulf of Thailand.
